Coloseo

martedi, 31 maggio 2016

Buonasera!!
Today we went adventuring to the Colosseum for our archaeology class. It was pretty cool to actually learn about it this time, rather than just randomly stumbling upon it (oops). The Colosseum was built under Emperor Vespasian and completed during the reign of Emperor Titus. There were many gladiator fights that took place inside for public entertainment. I'm not entirely sure why the ancient Romans thought it was fun to watch people murder each other, but that's a conversation for another day... Apart from the gladiators, many Christians were martyred in the Colosseum. It was almost surreal to gaze upon the place where so many of our family gave their lives for Christ. We also learned that the Pope does a Good Friday service in the Colosseum to commemorate them.

Inside

I saw a kitty there!!!

Because we have to be proper tourists

We came back, made lunch (during which there was a short "anatomy of a peach lesson"), went to class, and then attempted to find Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi, which was highly recommended to us by the lovely Sister Lois of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration, buuuuuuuut we managed to take the least efficient route and were disappointed to discover that it was closed by the time we got there. Sad face. We were able to go to mass at Chiesa di San Augustin di Campo Marzio though, so that was beautiful! Receiving Jesus is such a wonderful gift. Saint Monica's body was in this church, so we got to see her too! I'd call that a successful church hop evening.

Dissecting her peach pit. Always science with this beaut

St. Monica's tomb

We had a dinner guest later, and that was really nice. We also tried Fonzies, per Tim's command. Then Allison was ready to go beddy-bye.

He's going to be angry when he sees this, but I couldn't resist :)

Not as good as Cheetos

Good night, Allison!

Buona notte,
Kelsey and Allison
